Windows Server 2008 is providing a better platform for our employees to remotely work on our systems.
Paul Shulda, EVP and General Manager, Intricon Tibbetts Corp
Intricon Tibbetts Corp creates small transducers for pace makers, cell phones, and other small devices. Many of their employees work remotely, and they need to rely on their remote applications to be consistent and efficient.
Business Needs
The company's original environment consisted of two business units using two domains.
Each business unit was configured as a single server environment. The primary business
utilized its single server for Active Directory® directory service, file and print,
and Terminal Server. Over 50 personal computers (PCs) on this domain were supported by
a variety of platforms, ranging from Microsoft® Windows® 98 to Windows® XP. Several of
those PCs were tied to laboratory instrumentation.
The group has more than 20 remote employees that need dependable access to Microsoft
Office-based applications, as well as line-of-business (LOB) applications. Tibbetts'
employees were finding the original server too undependable, as well as too slow. The
company risked data corruption, as well as loss of productivity. Remote users were unable
to access the full toolsets required for performing their jobs, which resulted in delays,
lost contacts, and lost sales opportunities. Important work couldn't be completed until
employees made it in to the main office, which was a situation the company wanted to repair.
Solution
Tibbetts partnered with Know Technology and manually built one server running Windows
Server 2008 Standard. They are using Terminal Services 2008 for managing their remote access.
The company uses remote desktop to administer its servers. Terminal Services provides
access for PCs using Windows Vista® and Windows® XP. They are using Terminal Services
to centrally secure their data, deploy applications (including LOB applications), and provide
access to remote users in approximately 20 home offices.
Tibbetts is using a variety of the Terminal Services features to meet their
productivity goals, including Terminal Services (TS) RemoteApp™, Terminal Services
(TS), Terminal Services (TS) License Service, Terminal Services (TS) Web Access, and Terminal
Services Easy Print.
"We're a small, pretty conservative company, but we're glad Know Technology
convinced us to install and use Windows Server 2008. Often software upgrades bring new
features without improved performance. Happily, that's not the case for Windows Server 2008;
performance is better and user productivity has improved," says Paul Shulda, EVP and
General Manager, Intricon Tibbetts Corp.
Benefits
Tibbetts is very pleased by the productivity gains secured for their remote staff.
Their ROI schedule was based on the success of bringing multiple LOB applications to remote
staff, and they began seeing that benefit immediately after deployment.
The company's deployment was smooth. Know Technology provided Tibbetts with advising,
design, acquisition, and installation expertise to help with the deployment.
Tibbetts has found their employees enjoy improved communication with each other,
as well as their customers. Remote workers are now able to access client data and
information while working from their home offices. This has improved their daily workflow
and productivity has increased dramatically.
Specific benefits include:
- Increased primary server performance by 25% by offloading remote application access functions
- Improved end user productivity with better remote access for line of business (LOB) applications
- Improved security by allowing stronger controls on LOB applications
Windows Server 2008
