Hosting services notice from the Know Technology Data Center
Know Technology will be performing a web server upgrade at our data center
which will affect a small number of client websites. This
upgrade is part of our on-going effort to ensure that we are offering services that remain up-to-date
with today's technology. The challenge of balancing stability with the need
to update and upgrade both our hardware and software platforms means that we
occasionally need to decommission older servers and applications.
Know Technology regrets any inconvenience that this web server upgrade may
cause to our clients, but we pride ourselves on offering current solutions
to our client partners. Clients whose sites are affected by the server
upgrade have been contacted by letter.
Specifically, the upgrade will:
- Significantly improve performance
- Increase storage capacity
- Decrease the risk of hardware failure
- Significantly improve security, compatibility, and functionality
- Maintain hardware/software vendor support for the platform
The affected server has been scheduled for decommissioning on December
31st, 2008, with a goal date of November 1st, 2008 to
get all affected client sites moved to the new platform. Prior to this date, Know Technology will be provisioning
space for sites on a new web server that has more up-to-date hardware and
software. While the new server will provide the benefits of the latest application functionality,
security, and reliability, some websites may encounter some problems with the new platform if
they are not properly prepared and thoroughly tested in the new server environment.
Know Technology's shared server policy states that clients are responsible
for all the code within their website regardless of who developed it. Know
Technology is available to assist during this migration process, but we cannot be responsible for debugging
or modifying any website programming for you. It is each site owner's
responsibility to ensure that their code is up-to-date. We strongly encourage
that you contact the maintainer of your website with the platform information
below so they will be prepared to make the necessary changes for the new hosting
environment.
Current hosting platform: RedHat Linux 3 ES, Apache 2.0.46, MySQL 4.1.22, PHP 4.3.2
New hosting platform: Windows, IIS 6, ASP 2/3/3.5, MySQL 5.0.51, PHP 5.2.5
The following items should be given attention:
- Use of .htaccess files will not function
Your site may currently use an .htaccess file to control access permissions
to files, folders, and other elements of your site. This is an Apache-specific
function which will not work on the new Windows server. Microsoft IIS offers
alternate security features.
- PHP5 Changes - please visit http://www.php.net/manual/en/migration5.php for more information
Older versions of PHP allowed blocks of code to be enclosed in the tags "<?"
and "?>." The abbreviated start tag "<?" is no longer supported in PHP and
must be replaced with the more explicit start tag "<?php".
Also, certain functions used in older PHP code have been deprecated and/or
eliminated in new PHP versions. If your site uses these outdated functions, or if your
PHP code blocks do not begin as specified above, then changes will have to
be made to your site's code in order to make it work with the newer
version of PHP that has been installed on the new server.
- Use of PHP Global variables
The "Global variables" features in PHP allow web pages to access
and use data elements supplied in web forms or in the URL without explicitly
requesting them. While this can simplify coding, it can also open the door
for hackers to subvert or circumvent security measures or other features
by cleverly manipulating the URL used to access the page. For improved security,
global variables are disabled in PHP5 and are not supported in the upcoming PHP6.
If you are a client affected by this server upgrade and you require assistance
modifying your website's code, Know Technology has a web development staff which can work with you on
a fee basis to review and update your code and test your site prior to the move.
